We have learned that two of Pansies For Plato’s authors, Mick Dumdell and Ellie Mangle-Lero, and several of their friends, were set upon this afternoon and severely beaten by a large Black mob. Mr. Dumdell’s Lincoln Navigator was torched, and is a total loss.
The incident came about as a result of Mr. Dumdell’s and Ms. Mangle-Lero’s desire to atone for their enjoyment of the new television show, Wayward Pines, and the white privilege it represents. Mr. Dumdell wrote a fine piece on this issue the other day, and this excerpt explains why he, and the other white people, went to the inner city Black neighborhood:
I enjoy the show [Wayward Pines] immensely, while at the same time I am wracked with guilt for all the white privilege it exposes. I don’t plan to stop watching it. I have to know how it ends. Plus, M. Night Shyamalan is an Indian-American, and it would be very racist to not watch his show. Because his people were colonized by the British the same way that Obama’s forebears were. I talked to several of my friends, some who post here, and we have decided that we should pay our own personal penance for watching the show.
So, six of us are going to leave our gated communities in suburbia, pile into my Lincoln Navigator, and travel en masse to a poor Black neighborhood in our city, and hand out bottled artesian water, and healthy organic oatmeal-raisin cookie treats to Black youths at the numerous playgrounds and basketball courts. They are out for summer vacation, and this would be a good way for us to express our solidarity with them during their period of grief following the deaths of Michael Brown, Freddie Gray, and the nine Blacks in Charleston.
I will take pictures and post them here. Ellie Mangle-Lero is going with me and I am sure that she will write some good poems about the experience. I hope that I have managed to make you more aware of all the racism and white privilege that surrounds us. The racism that none of us see unless we are actively searching for it.
Apparently, when they arrived at the inner city playground, and began handing out organic oatmeal-raisin cookies to the Black children there, they were mistaken for a group of white child molesters who were trying to lure the Black children inside the Navigator. I was able to talk briefly with Ms. Mangle-Lero, who was beaten, and nearly sexually assaulted by several Black youths. Thankfully, the police arrived in the nick of time, and were able to wrest Ms. Mangle-Lero from their grasp. She has been treated for her numerous bruises, cuts, lacerations, and cracked ribs. I only had a few moments with her before she was put under heavy sedation.
I have not yet been able to talk to Mr. Dumdell, as he was involuntarily committed to a local mental health facility for a 72 hour observation period. The police report has not yet been released, but I did have a brief discussion with one of the officers. He reported that Mr. Dumdell, “was acting as crazy as a betsy bug, and ranting about organic oatmeal-raisin cookies, somebody called Abby, and a TV show called Wayward Pines.” In light of the above excerpt, it is clear that Mr. Dumdell was trying to explain to the officers why they were in the neighborhood and handing out cookies to the children.
I have secured legal representation for Mr. Dumdell, and am sure that we can obtain his early release in this unfortunate matter. That is all the information I have at this time. Their injuries do not appear to be life threatening, thanks in part to the timely arrival of the police and SWAT team! I expect that they will both be back home in a few days. I will provide more information as it becomes available. In the meantime, let us all pray for their speedy recovery!
